The Bolivar County Historical Society October meeting is just around the corner. Make plans to meet at the Capps Archives Seminar Room at 12pm on Monday, October10. We hope to see you there!
Civil War Nursing
Overview of presentation:
The focus of this presentation is on the history of the American Civil War, with an emphasis on the Vicksburg battle and siege, and its significance in the development of modern nursing. Participants will gain an understanding of the roots of medical hierarchy, the state of medical care during the mid 1800s, and the challenges women faced in delivering nursing care to ill and injured soldiers.
About the speaker:
Dr. Lizabeth Carlson is currently the dean of the Robert E. Smith School of Nursing at Delta State University. She earned her BSN at Missouri State University, her MSN at University of South Alabama, and her DNS at Louisiana State University Health Science Center in New Orleans. She has been an RN for over 30 years, and spent 5 ½ years of that time as a Captain in the USAF Nurse Corps. Her interest in nursing history started 7 years ago when she took a history course on the Shiloh battlefield at DSU. Since that time, she has taught a graduate level Civil War Nursing Course at Delta State.
Please join us for what promises to be an intriguing and stimulating program. We will meet at 12pm in the Capps Archives Seminar Room. Bring a friend!
